The Samsung Epix isnt technically an upgraded version of the popular Samsung BlackJack II smartphone--but it could be. The Epix features a sleek design that looks a whole lot like the BlackJack II, while adding some nifty upgrades to the phone's functionality, such as a touch screen, support for Wi-Fi, and Windows Mobile 6.1.
Price and Availability
Like the BlackJack II, the Samsung Epix is available from AT&T for $200 after rebates and when signing a two-year contract. You should note that the $100 mail-in rebate comes in the form of a Visa check card--not cash. That card can be used to pay your AT&T Wireless bill, though.
Design
The Epix features the candybar-style design found on many of Samsung's smartphones, and the phone is an attractive--if a bit boring--shade of gray. You get a 2.5-inch touch screen, and it includes both a stylus and a full QWERTY keyboard. Instead of the trackball or central button found on many smartphones, the Epix sports an optical mouse directly below its display; you can control the on-screen cursor by moving your finger on the mouse pad, and then can double click to make a selection.
Web Browsing
In addition to Wi-Fi, the Epix also supports AT&T's fast HSDPA network for speedy Web browsing. The phone includes the Internet Explorer Mobile browser.
Software
As a Windows Mobile-based phone, the Epix provides you with plenty of productivity applications. It includes Microsoft Office Mobile, which lets you view and edit Word and Excel files, and view PowerPoint presentations.
Messaging
The Epix supports Microsoft Direct Push, which lets you sync Outlook-based e-mail, contacts, and calendars. It also includes support for AT&T's Xpress Mail and Good Mobile Messaging, and comes with the AIM, Yahoo Messenger, Windows Live Messenger instant messaging clients.
Camera
The 2-megapixel camera includes a digital zoom, and lets you adjust the image quality and white balance. It also includes a self timer and can capture brief video clips in addition to still photos.
Music and More
You can play back audio and video files using the included Windows Media Player application, and the Epix also supports AT&T's Mobile Music service, so you can download songs directly to the phone. The Epix is GPS-enabled and works with the AT&T Navigator application, which will deliver turn-by-turn directions to your phone (for an extra monthly fee).
